Client: Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT)
Program: Website development

Challenge
KDOT launched a study to determine needed improvements to the intersection of I-435, I-35 and K-10 in Johnson County, Kan., and required a venue to exchange ideas, review proposals and collect feedback. The agency worked with the firm leading the study, HNTB Corporation, to develop a public involvement website that could generate awareness, solicit community input, facilitate public engagement, and house all public project documents.

Solution
The team started by creating a brand, “Johnson County Gateway,” and logo that served as shorthand for the I-435/I-35/K-10 interchanges and, as a long-term identity for this crossroads. Based on the newly developed brand, the SWC/HNTB team designed a simple, clean, user-friendly, and easy-to-update website for the client. Extra care was taken to ensure the site was fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and all other applicable state and federal regulations.

Results
The site has earned thousands of page views by hundreds of unique visitors, an impressive feat for a site dedicated to a study of highway ramps. The blog format and questions posed encourage public comment which, when received, is responded to by a team member. The often large files of public documents are easily accessible to local officials, news media and other interested parties. The program earned Sturges Word and HNTB an award at the annual PRISM gala hosted by the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.
